Religious jokes on the ‘D list’

Posted by: Gary Stern - Posted in Uncategorized on Sep 18, 2007

Am I the only one who didn’t hear about (so-called) comedian Kathy Griffin’s “Jesus rant”:http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN1144512920070911 when she accepted an award at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards?

Apparently, she said: “A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now.”

Catholic League boss Bill Donohue called it “hate speech.”

tjndc5-5ggwdtah15d538mahvh_layout.jpgGriffin’s whole act, as I understand it, is being offensive and turning (some? most?) people off. In fact, she won an award for best reality program for her Bravo show “My Life on the D-List.”

I guess she’s aiming for the E list.

Which leads to the question: Did I not hear about Griffin’s acceptance speech because she was offensive to Christians instead of Jews or Muslims? Or was it that no one pays attention to Griffin? Or have I just been out of it lately?

It should be pointed out that fellow comedian Sarah Silverman, who also seeks to be as offensive as possible, sometimes makes jokes about being Jewish. I’ve heard a couple that were pretty awful. But no one seems to care because it’s all a big joke (albeit, it seems to me, a bad one).

Griffin, by the way, released a statement in which she asked: “Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humor?”

If it was during a stand up routine. Sure, joke all you like, it may be in bad taste but thats the environment.

This was an awards ceremony. Maybe it was the vernacular. Instead of Suck it .. maybe if she left out Suck it. or chose a better phrase it wouldnt be so bad. I only had issue, because it was covered up so neatly and cleanly. meanwhile Mel Gibson, who made a passing drunken comment to a cop, with No media around, was hung out to dry.

I too don’t see why people have to thank any entity for doing well. You are the one that achieved the goal. I am sure God/Jesus/Mohammed really doesn’t want to take credit for something you did well. All they really want to hear is thank you for giving me this life to lead or being their to guide me. Everything else is human dogma. ;-]

I have plenty of humor, I just think if one person can get in trouble for saying something off center about one religion, then everyone else in that field has to adhere to the same standard.
    thats my 3 cents.
